About This Project
A community-led effort to document the acequia irrigation systems of Northern New Mexico — some dating to the 1600s — using a combination of GPS survey, archival research, and elder interviews. The resulting open-access map will support water rights advocacy, restoration planning, and cultural preservation for the 700+ acequias still operating in the region.
Documented Impact
214 acequias mapped to date. 48 elder interviews recorded. Data shared with 12 mayordomo associations.
